67 th reunion - concise report on the AGM From - Web Team- COBA

Dear Campionites

Greetings to all, Hope all of you are in the pink of health.

The Old Boys' Day this year was held on 28th, the last Sunday in July. The School Annual Sports was held the previous day. In view of the fact that four other schools in Trichy had their annual sports' day on 27th, and in view of a wedding on 27th night as well as several other functions in Trichy on 28th, the turnout for this Old Boys' Day wasn't overwhelming. Even so the attendance was well over a hundred, I guess. I am sure that you are really not keen on receiving a detailed report such as the minutes of the AGM. So I am mentioning below only a few salient points which took my fancy:

1) Rev. Bro. Arul, the Principal of the School and the Governor-Patron of COBA, mentioned that the Govt. has made (or will soon be making) it mandatory that all schools will be co-ed. This means, he said that COBA will have to be re-christened COSA (for Campion Old Students' Association). COSA, to me sounds rather insipid. I would much rather have a COBAGA or even COGABA. But it's a little too early to ponder such steps, I guess, as it may be a good ten years by the time the first girl passes out of the School, unless they start admitting girls in Std. XI rightaway.

2) A separate fund has been created to help out former teachers who may need some monetary help. Two such teachers were gifted a not too insubstantial a purse at the Meet.

4) Teachers who had retired during the year were felicitated.

5) The meeting was informed that for the first time in the history of the School a serving teacher and a lay person acted as Principal for 3 months or so during the year, while Rev.Bro. Arul was away attending to duties assigned to him by the Society of Gabriel Brothers.

6) Mr. Palaniappan who had passed out in 1971 and who is now knighted in Malaysia and running a University there offered to provide one seat for an Anglo-Indian student in his Medical college absolutely free of cost, including board and lodge for the duration of the course.

7) Palaniappan also felt that the finances of COBA needed to be bolstered and offered a donation of Rs. 1 lakh.

8) The Secretary and the Treasurer of the Committee (Anurag Sethi and Mahesh Khanna) who had rendered yoeman service for 3 years stepped down from office, and their places were taken by Chettia Pillai and Subramani. All the other main office-bearers remained the same.

With Warm Regards
